A Week of Twyford Diesels - 37s, 47s and 57s galore!
It was a very interesting week for diesel rail traction in Twyford, with multiple railtours and unusual rail activity taking place. We weren't able to see all of it, but here is a selection of what we were able to see. Simon says "my favourite of the diesels was the class 37."
Locos featured in this video
Class 47 D1924 - Crewe Diesel Depot on a rail tour (and again coming back)
57603 - Tintagel Castle
57602 - Restormel Castle (on either end of the Night Riviera)
47828 in lovely Intercity livery
Class 37 D6817 with support coach on a positioning move
57313 - Scarborough Castle

Wonderful video Simon. The festiniog railway is a fantastic trip. It's clever how the volunteers thought outside the square when rebuilding the line around the reservoir. I heard in a documentary about flying Scotsman coming home to York that Alan Pegler not only saved Flying Scotsman but also the festiniog railway and he was considered to be the father of railway preservation. Before the advent of steam locomotives, the slate trucks were pulled up by pack horses and pony's. Once they've reached the top the trucks would come down by gravity. Since you mentioned that it was like a rollercoaster, the festiniog railway is the world's first rollercoaster. Coolio 👍. The photos on your Facebook page of the festiniog is brilliant. Keep your steam up Simon. Take care. Kevig

I haven't tried installing a sound decoder before but hopefully in future I'll give it a go once I learn how to insert a dcc decoder. What's pretty funny about Welsh steam railways is that the Llangollen Railway is the only Standard-Gauge line, the rest of them are all narrow gauge. I'm not saying it's a bad thing,I'm just saying.

That foam rubber ballast is still available from Noch # 99167 Gleisbettung. I used both the Noch and the one you use and they are identical. You can cut them at an angle to go under points and use foam glue to join them. It is a bit fiddly but it works. Also, please, you and Simon always wear safety glasses when cutting small bits off the end of track. The severed bits can fly so easily into an eye and do a lot of damage.

Great work 👍, interesting how you used the foam type of ballast to put all the flexi track together. That could be an idea for a future model railway. I found flexi track to be rather tricky because the last time I used n scale flexi track it ended up in complete shambles. Mostly due to not having the right tools. It's a good thing that you demonstrated how to use it and solder wires onto the rails. By the way, how are things getting on? Keep your steam up Simon, your track work in the train shed looks impressive. Cheers Kevig

    • @SimonsTrainAdventures

Yes the flexi track needs a bit more work, especially making curves, which sadly I forgot to film. The templates make it much easier. Our layout is almost all flexi track. We’ve only used set track for sections that go behind the scenes. All is great with us. Hope you are doing well too.

Wow Simon, the llangollen railway is a lovely line. Particularly berwyn station which has been built on a viaduct which is very unique. Lucky you had the chance to travel on a wedding special especially with 3802 at the front and riding a dmu to berwyn. The red lever you mentioned that was in the cab, I think it is something to do with the braking system but I'm not too sure of its function. A funny thing happened when I was on the train to Swinburn university today. I accidently took the wrong train by mistake! So I ended up missing my stop and getting off two stations down at Camberwell. Luckily the station staff were able to help me get back on track again, and I manage to get back to glenferrie just before class began. The end of the line turns into a cycle track that takes you into La Roche sur Yon. The velo rail never went further and is the site of a disused train line from La Roche sur yon to St Gilles-Croix-de- Vie that was closed in the 60's I believe. 20 + years ago the velo rail was very popular and the etiquette was that outward-bound 'train' had to give way to homeward-bound travellers, this meant lifting the machine off the rails to let the other pass. Over the years it has fallen in popularity but can still get a little busy in August. I regularly cycle that way and rarely see anyone using it. Glad you all seemed to enjoy it.

Fantastic video Simon. I bet those class 37 diesels look so cool especially when they growl away from the station. Swindon steam museum looks like a very interesting and fascinating place to visit. I love how you get to interact with both a signal box and engine driver simulator so you could learn how people did these jobs on the railway themselves back in the day. Lucky you spotted City of Truro and King George V, it is equally special that you got to see the real engine as well as have a model of it in your train shed. When Isambard Kingdom Brunel rode the Liverpool and Manchester railway on rocket, he could barely draw anything let alone a circle. So, he opted for wooden sleepers instead and it worked considerably. This practice is still used on railways today. Also, I saw your photos of Clun Castle on Facebook and it looks absolutely beautiful. Keep your steam up Simon take care Kevig

Spectacular video Simon, not only you saw the Riviera sleeper train, but also one of the black 5s that pulled the 15 Guinness special on August 11 1968. When the engine blew it's whistle as it sped through, it was calling out, incoming!! Nifty! I'm attending an online volunteer information session for Puffing Billy railway on Thursday, hope to get a good insight of being a volunteer driver. I can't wait to get started. Keep your steam up Simon. Cheers Kevig

Fantastic video Simon, it is really interesting to see these model railway projects at work. Your drone footage of black 5 44871 was spectacular especially when you saw it thunder under the bridge. It reminds me of Thomas the Tank Engine. City of Truro did do 100 mph long before Flying Scotsman was even a sketch on a drawing board. Why some enthusiasts make a fuss about it I'll never know! That is a very nice new use for an old writing desk, it always best to recycle rather than throw away. I saw a piano in the background whilst you revealed the writing desk, do you do piano lessons yourself? I play the piano too and one of my favorite songs to play is hymn to the robin from the book, the boy the mole the fox and the horse by Charlie Mackesy. It makes me smile every time I play it. Keep your steam up Simon Cheers mate Kevig

Thanks for watching. We were really pleased with the drone footage recently. It just keeps getting better! Simon’s dad plays piano and is also playing/singing the music for the channel.

Another fantastic video from the AB rail expo Simon. The first layout overlord which depicts the operations of D day in 1944 shows that all railways have a role to play during a time of conflict. And that is one big submarine for a model on that scale! The layout Broadford is a location on the north eastern mainline between Melbourne and Albury where I come from. Many trains graced the line including the Spirit of Progress and Southern Aurora, it is still one of Australia's most vital rail corridors. The north eastern mainline also played host believe it or not to Flying Scotsman when it visited Australia in 1988-1989. Keep up steam Simon ⭐. Take care mate. Kevig

Great video Simon, 😁. It's nice to see a review of new model trains in the train shed. Very cheeky how you included bananas into the mix and it was so good to see you excited and having fun! Bananas and apples are some of my favorite fruits. I made a couple new additions to my train set, I built a miniature railway using some leftover n scale track and I made my own version of the orient express restaurant which uses the 2017 film train. It must've been an interesting idea to carry bananas by train! The locomotives head code will tell the signalman that the train is carrying perishable goods and bananas are classified as perishable and be handled with great care, other wise there will be mashed bananas! Keep your steam up Simon! Take care. Kevig

A model railway with a miniature railway in it is a cool idea. Thanks for watching.

Looks like you had quite a busy weekend filming trains with the drone Simon. The black 5s in the previous video reminded me of the 15 Guinness special in 1968 and that western diesel sounded a bit like a helicopter buzzing in the distance. I'm feeling a bit under the weather because of a sore throat but at least I got to see puffing billy yesterday! Keep your steam up! Take care Simon Kevig
